True crime podcast Serial has captivated audiences around the world since its debut, often taking the number one spot in the podcast charts.
We found out everything you need to know about what the podcast’s creators are up to including a new spin-off debuting March 28.
When is season 3 of Serial?
While producer Julie Snyder reportedly says we can expect the new series this summer, currently there’s not a concrete release date.
According to the podcast’s website, this is dependent on how the true-crime story develops over the course of their investigations.
In the meantime though, fans can try the new spin-off, S-Town, which begins on March 28.
What can we expect from S-Town?
A post shared by S-Town Podcast (@stownpodcast) on
Just like Serial’s first season, S-Town revolves around a murder, this time in Alabama.
The podcast’s website says: “John despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks a reporter to investigate the son of a wealthy family who's allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, sparking a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man's life.”
This time, it’s not Sarah Koenig’s lyrical voice walking you through an elaborate mystery: S-Town is hosted by Brian Reed.
Some reports speculate that this case will surround the death of John Willie Smith, an Alabama resident believed to have buried $100,000 worth of gold shortly before he died, though we shall have to wait for the show’s premiere to find out exactly what’s going on.
How can I listen to S-Town?
Unlike Serial, for which we had to wait a week or two between episodes, S-Town adopts a Netflix-style model, with all episodes in the series available simultaneously from March 28.
It can be listened to via the Podcasts app on iPhone, or Android users can access it using Stitcher or RadioPublic.
What happened in season one and two of Serial?
Season one looked into the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee and at how her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of her killing.
Over the course of 12 episodes, Sarah Koenig trawls back through all the court documents, police interrogations, trial testimony, and talked to everyone she could find to discover a case far more complicated than the one first presented to the jury.
In a change of direction, season two looked into the story of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier who had been held captive by the Taliban for nearly five years.
His return to the US after being rescued by a US Special Operations team in a Black Hawk helicopter in May 2014 by President Barack Obama, though reaction to his return was not as positive as you may first expect as some soldiers from his unit accused him of walking off their outpost in Afghanistan into hostile territory.
Koenig found out his side of the story and why he did it.
What’s happened to Adnan Syed and Bowe Bergdahl since?
Serial Podcast Season 3 Premiere Date 2016
Serial brought international attention to both men and the cases they were involved with.
Though he was initially serving a life sentence for Hae Min Lee’s murder, Adnan Syed has since had his conviction vacated and has been granted a retrial, thanks partly to evidence discovered during the making of the podcast.
Judge Martin P. Welch who made the ruling said that Syed’s lawyer Christina Gutierrez “rendered ineffective assistance when she failed to cross-examine the state's expert regarding the reliability of cell tower location evidence”.
He currently remains in custody awaiting his new trial.

— Serial (@serial) July 5, 2016Sgt Bergdahl currently faces a court-martial for desertion and endangerment charges, though his lawyers attempted to appeal when President Donald Trump was sworn into office.
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump had called Bergdahl “a dirty rotten traitor”; once Trump became president, Bergdahl’s defence team argued that it would now be impossible to guarantee him a fair trial.
The motion was denied on March 23.
What do we think season 3 is going to be about?
The podcast’s creators are tight-lipped on this though if current rumours are to be believed, it looks as though this series will return to murder.

It’s thought that some recording of this took place alongside season two, with Koenig spotted at an Ohio murder trial in 2014.

Luckily for fans, it seems they won't spend very long asking, 'when does Serial Season 3 come out,' because we already know that those episodes are due to air in Spring 2016. While a definite date has not been set, it's exciting to know that, as soon as the current case wraps up, there will be a new one to devour almost immediately. According to the May 2015 newsletter, Season 3 is already in the works (though it's not being recorded just yet):
Third: we are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new stories. This means we’re planning on a third season of Serial. And we hope it means we can reduce the amount of time between the end of Season Two and the beginning of Season Three. As it stands, we intend to launch Season 2 this fall and Season 3 next spring. Sorry - we can’t tell you details about the new stories yet. What we can say is that they’re very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us.

The subject of Season 3 has yet to be announced, but we now know that Serial Season 2 is about Bowe Bergdahl, the American soldier who was held hostage for almost five years by the Taliban. Season 2 is sure to be every bit as captivating as the first, but it already has people guessing what Season 3 might be about. Whatever the case is, Serial is sure to gain lots of interest on its behalf.
Public interest in Serial is understandably high, with fans keen to find out which cases will be featured in the forthcoming seasons. However, Maxim reached out to Emily Condon, Serial's production manager, to try and confirm the content of Season 2 prior to its premiere, and received the following response, asking journalists to respect the program makers privacy:
Serial Podcast Season 3 Review
'We'd very much appreciate if fellow journalists would give us some room and not feel the need to attempt to dig into and try to figure out what you think we might be doing, especially since we're actively reporting stories, and having a bunch of wild speculation out there makes our job reporting harder. Doesn't feel very menschy. In any case, here's what I can tell you: The Serial staff is currently working on several things simultaneously: Season 2, Season 3, and some other podcast projects. For now we're not talking publicly about anything that we're working on.'
It seems likely that Season 3 will remain closely guarded until much closer to the air date. But knowing that we only have to wait until Spring 2016 for Season 3 of Serial is really great news.
